Reading the plate. Red dots inside the dashed zone = umpire called a ball on a strike — pitcher won that challenge. Red dots outside the dashed zone = umpire called a strike on a ball — batter won. Notice the cluster of red just outside the right edge: those are the famous "off-the-plate" called strikes that catchers know to challenge. Heart-of-plate is mostly gray because heart-of-plate calls are rarely close enough to challenge.

Why two percentages? Raw % treats a 1-of-1 the same as a 25-of-50 — both show 100% / 50%. The Reliable % column applies the Wilson 95% confidence lower bound, which shrinks small-sample numbers toward the league mean. Sort by Reliable % to see which umpires the ABS system is correcting consistently, not just occasionally with luck.

The fair view — accuracy on every called pitch

Challenge data only covers ~5% of pitches and is biased toward calls players think are wrong. The view below is built from every called pitch in 2026 (104,000+), classified against the ABS strike zone independently. This is the unbiased accuracy metric.

What "stolen strikes" means. A called strike on a pitch that the ABS zone says was a ball — the umpire gave the pitcher a strike that wasn't there. Lost strikes = the inverse (ball called on a pitch in the zone). The Net bias column is positive when the umpire systematically favors pitchers (stolen − lost). Across MLB, stolen strikes outnumber lost strikes ~20-to-1 — umpires are pitcher-friendly, and ABS now measures by how much.

About this dashboard. The MLB Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System debuted league-wide in the 2026 season. Each team gets two challenges per game (kept on success, lost after two failures). Only batters, pitchers, and catchers may challenge. The ABS strike zone is 17″ wide, 53.5% of batter height at top, 27% at bottom, measured at the middle of the plate.

Reading note. Overturn rate is a biased sample — players only challenge ~5% of pitches, and they prefer to challenge calls they think are wrong. A high overturn % means an umpire is being challenged successfully when challenged — not that they're miscalling every pitch. For the fairer per-pitch accuracy view, ingest Statcast pitch data with abs-umpires daily-refresh --with-statcast.
